Estimating cell probabilities under order-restricted odds ratios

چکیده
In medical, biological and social science, three-dimensional contingency tables with ordered categories usually arise and one expects a monotone association, yet one may prefer not to assume a particular parametric model. One of its key roles is how to estimate its parameters under monotonic restrictions. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to compute the maximum likelihood estimation under an ordered restriction placed on odds ratios. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimating and contextualizing the attenuation of odds ratios due to non-collapsibility
The odds ratio is a measure commonly used for expressing the association between an exposure and a binary outcome. A feature of the odds ratio is that its value depends on the choice of the distribution over which the probabilities in the odds ratio are evaluated. In particular, this means that an odds ratio conditional on a covariate may have a different value from an odds ratio marginal on th...
متن کاملMaximum likelihood estimates with order restrictions on probabilities and odds ratios: A geometric programming approach
The problem of assigning cell probabilities to maximize a multinomial likelihood with order restrictions on the probabilies and or restrictions on the local odds ratios is modeled as a posynomial geometric program GP a class of nonlinear optimization problems with a well developed duality theory and collection of algorithms Local odds ratios provide a measure of association between categorical ...

متن کاملHow Much More Likely? The Implications of Odds Ratios for Probabilities
Binary outcome data are common in research and evaluation. They are often analyzed using logistic regression, and results of these analyses are often reported in the form of odds ratios (ORs). However, ORs are not directly interpretable in the metric commonly used in policy-relevant discussions, which concerns probabilities. ORs are unfamiliar to nonresearchers, and their relationship to probab...
متن کاملPooling dietary data using questionnaires with open-ended and predefined responses: implications for comparing mean intake or estimating odds ratios.
In the current era of diet-gene analyses, large sample sizes are required to uncover the etiology of complex diseases. As such, consortia form and often combine available data. Food frequency questionnaires, which commonly use 2 different types of responses about the frequency of intake (predefined responses and open-ended responses), may be pooled to achieve the desired sample size. The common...
